Welcome to SUMMER!!!! Let’s officially start the season with a test of your Summer Cinema Savvy. Using the following cryptic clues, see if you can deduce what film, set during the best quarter of the year, is being described. (It’s more fun if you don’t cheat by using the Internet or other reference guides.)

1. This movie features; Joan Cusack’s brother, the funny guy from the answer to #9 below, Ashton Kutcher’s lady, and a motorcycle gang. 

2. This movie, one of the first teen romance movies is set in Maine and features a memorable piece of movie music. The leading actress is a famous “goody-goody” and the tough girl in answer # 12’s movie title sings a song about her.

3. In this movie, Rossano Brazzi’s inamorata, from the answer to question #7 has retired to her summer cottage.  The actor playing her film husband is the real father of her on-screen daughter…

4. Robocop and the beauty from The Deep, Rich and Famous and Day for Night re-acquaintat a summer resort.  The impersonator of George Emerson from A Room with a View, is there to make things interesting.

5. Here’s another movie whose haunting musical theme became well-known. Set on Nantucket Island, the poignant story is about a teenaged boy who becomes preoccupied with an older married woman and subsequently “becomes a man” after unexpected events come to pass.

6. After she leaves Oz, Dorothy becomes a farmer in New England and lets her performer sister use her barn as a practice stage for her musical theatre group. That guy from An American in Paris is there to fall in love with the lady-farmer—who sure can sing and dance!

7. Schuyler Grant’s great Aunt meets Rossano Brazzi at a café in Venice.  This is a touching love story about 2 mature people. The co-screenwriter,    H. E Bates, wrote the book; The Darling Buds of May.

8. What movie stars; a recently-retired former heartthrob, the man who would be Citizen Kane and the future Jessica Fletcher? Adapted from a famous William Faulkner book, this movie was re-made with Don Johnson and Judith Ivey in 1985.

9. Against the backdrop of summer camp, the portrayer of Fred Wright gets closer to his younger brother with help from the funny man from answer #1.  Olivia King is on hand to nurse everyone.

10. This summer film features an associate of the funny man from #1 and # 9 who gets into a fight with the actor who played Rambo’s boss. The tagline for this movie is “Life’s a Beach.”

11. In a nutshell, this movie deals with identical red-headed twins, summer camp, and pranks. Appearing in the 2 versions of this film, and in no particular order, are; the actress who played Mrs. Miniver— a classic American film, the Dad from TV’s  Family Affair, and the portrayer of Jerry Lee Lewis. (We won’t tell you who played the 2 sets of twins.)

12. Before she married a minister, Viola Eliot from Road to Avonlea lead a group of rebellious high school girls, in this classic celebration of high school life. TV’s Vinnie Barbarino is also on hand.
